BodyVox, the good-humored, light-hearted company that straddles the line between pop culture and high art, returns to The Joyce November 15-20. They will perform A Thousand Little Cities, an evening-length work that expresses an acute sense of place with a skeptical take on social interaction. Founded in 1997 by Jamey Hampton and Ashley Roland, formerly of MOMIX and ISO, the company's aesthetic--sleek, athletic dancing that takes the troupe's members down to the floor and into the air--is not unfamiliar. But the sophisticated, witty blend of media and movement, Mitchell Rose's surreal films, collaborator Tad Savinar's visual sensibility, and the excellence of the dancing, make Cities provocative as well as fun.
