Meth no laughing matter. While we thank you for your crystal meth meth (m th)n. coverage, we are disturbed by the flippant tone used to report the meth-related arrest of a Chicagoan ["Bad Role Model," September 13]. Like many in the LGBT community, we are concerned about the impact of crystal meth on some of our members. When we address the manufacturing, sale, use, or abuse of any drug, including meth, it is essential to keep in mind that we are talking about human beings who are making and living the results of decisions for a variety of complicated reasons. Messages to reduce the allure of crystal meth that also engage active users along the spectrum from use to abuse must be factual and compassionate and, most important, meet people where they are. Effective interventions, including constructive criticism, do not use embarrassment or shame-based techniques to deter people from engaging in risky activities. Pointing a finger or making a mockery of someone's life is of no assistance to anyone in trouble. Our community is ridiculed enough, and it's especially painful and damaging for all those concerned when it comes from within--even when it's "just a joke." Methamphetamine hydrochloride.
