Metalcasting industry represented at workshop on industrial by-products.In an effort to increase the use of industrial by-products, the Portland Cement portland cement Binding agent of present-day concrete. It is a finely ground powder made by burning and grinding a limestone mixed with clay or shale. Its inventor, Joseph Aspdin (1799–1855), patented the process in 1824, naming the material for its resemblance to the Assn. (PCA (tool, programming) PCA - A dynamic analyser from DEC giving information on run-time performance and code use. ) and the Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and (EPA EPA eicosapentaenoic acid. Representatives from PCA organized this meeting in order to facilitate a dialogue between EPA, the cement industry, and other industries that could contribute byproducts to cement kilns across the country. AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System. AFS - Andrew File System was asked to participate in the meeting because spent molding sand (Founding) a kind of sand containing clay, used in making molds. See also: Molding can be used as a raw material in the manufacturing of cement. Along with the metalcasting industry, the steel, utility, paper and rubber industries were among those represented. The participants discussed some of the key barriers (geographic, environmental/health, regulatory and community) that prevent the use of industrial by-products as additives to cement mixtures. For example, some cement kilns choose not to use molding sand as a material because it contains trash or other foreign substances. As a result of the meeting, the metalcasting industry will participate in a mapping project to pinpoint the locations of cement kilns and other industries around the country. This map will help facilitate greater interaction between cement kilns and industries in close proximity that could potentially contribute their by-products. In addition, AFS will be working with PCA to develop a list of "Best Management Practices" (BMPs) for the use of molding sand as feedstock for cement production. John Kurtz of Kurtz Brothers Inc., Independence, Ohio Independence is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 7,109. Geography Independence is located at GR1. , served as the AFS representative. "I am excited about the potential for increasing the use of foundry sand in cement production," Kurtz said. "I think a lot of good suggestions came out of this meeting, and we look forward to continue working on this issue." Kurtz also noted that the meeting was a great example of how the EPA and industries can work together to bring positive outcomes for each party involved while also improving the environment. |
