Metalcasters learn energy cost reduction strategies at AFS.

The AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System.

AFS - Andrew File System
Technical Div. held a seminar Oct. 25-26 on energy savings in metalcasting. The two-day event, was the first AFS-sponsored, comprehensive look at energy saving for both ferrous ferrous (fĕr`əs), iron in the +2 valence state.

facilities, attended the workshop to learn ways to lower their energy costs. Several industry leaders and representatives from top energy companies, such as ComEd, discussed such money-saving issues as knowing where energy is used, reviewing energy bills to discover more economical solutions, maintaining equipment, and understanding melting and holding costs. In addition, attendees learned of Industrial Assessment Centers, a resource provided by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that offers free and confidential energy assessments, and DOE best practices programs, which are described at www.oit. doe.gov/bestpractices.

"With energy costs on the rise, it is important that metalcasters be aware of their own costs, as well as ways to reduce their energy consumption," said Bob Eppich, conference chairman and president of Eppich Technologies.
