Mesaba Airlines Reaches Tentative Agreement with Mechanics Group.


MINNEAPOLIS & ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Mesaba Airlines said today that it has reached a tentative agreement with its mechanics, represented by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) is an independent union that represents aircraft maintenance employees of commercial airlines in the United States. The agreement is subject to approval by Mesaba's AMFA-represented employees and supports the airline in meeting its required reduction in annual labor costs.

Mesaba announced that it had reached a tentative agreement with the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) on Oct. 28, 2006, and with the Association of Flight Attendants The Association of Flight Attendants (commonly known as AFA) is a union representing flight attendants in the United States. AFA represents 55,000 flight attendants at 20 airlines, making it the world's largest flight attendant union.  (AFA-CWA) on Oct. 29, 2006. An agreement on permanent wage and benefit reductions previously had been reached by Mesaba employees represented by the Transport Workers Union of America Transport Workers Union of America (TWU) is a United States labor union that was founded in 1934 by subway workers in New York City, then expanded to represent transit employees in other cities, primarily in the eastern U.S.  (TWU).

The company's restructuring plan centers on three goals: securing its core business of 49 Saabs with Northwest Airlines; growing its business with Northwest and achieving a cost structure that positions Mesaba to be very competitive for new opportunities.

Mesaba operates as a Northwest Jet Airlink and Airlink partner under an airline service agreement with Northwest Airlines. The airline serves 88 cities in the United States and Canada from Northwest's and Mesaba's three major hubs: Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Memphis. Mesaba operates an advanced fleet of regional jet and jet-prop aircraft, consisting of the 69 passenger Avro RJ85, the 30-34 passenger Saab SF340 and the 50 passenger Canadair Regional Jet. Mesaba filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on October 13, 2005 and continues to operate as a debtor-in-possession. Mesaba maintains a web site at www.mesaba.com.
