Server with Departmental File Server Capabilities

Meridian Data, Inc. (NASDAQ/NMS:MDCD MDCD Michigan Department of Career Development
MDCD Mobile Data Collection Device
MDCD Message-Driven Confidence-Driven
), a leading provider of network attached storage products, today announced the release of its second-generation multifunction departmental network storage server, Meridian TNT Server(TM) 2000.

The new server addresses the needs of both large internal corporate departments and small businesses. The TNT Server 2000 is highly customizable and can support configurations ranging from an entry level of 14 network CD-ROMs to system configurations supporting hard drive caching of at least 375 CD-ROMs simultaneously.

"Meridian has set a new standard for enterprise-class CD/DVD network servers," said Chuck Joseph, Meridian Data's executive vice president. "The TNT Server 2000 provides system managers with the performance, capacity and flexibility to provide a variety of storage solutions within one system.

"They can configure mixed CD, DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

and hard disk media storage on their LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  to address the specific needs for file storage and CD networking, while also providing a secure platform for network applications such as an intranet, print server or network backup controller."

High-Performance CD Server

The TNT Server 2000 incorporates a 400MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  Pentium II The successor to the Pentium Pro from Intel. Pentium II refers to the CPU chip or the PC that uses it. Code named "Klamath," the Pentium II was a Pentium Pro with MMX multimedia instructions.  processor with a minimum of 128MB of 100MHz SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) A type of dynamic RAM (DRAM) memory chip that has been widely used since the late 1990s. SDRAM chips eliminated wait states by dividing the chip into two cell blocks and interleaving data between them.  memory and a Fast Ethernet An earlier name for 100Mbps Ethernet. See 100Base-T.

(networking) Fast Ethernet - A version of Ethernet developed in the 1990s(?) which can carry 100 Mbps compared with standard Ethernet's 10 Mbps. It requires upgraded network cards and hubs.
network adapter A printed circuit board that plugs into the bus of both user machines (clients) and servers in a local area network (LAN). Also commonly called a "network interface card" (NIC) or "LAN card," the network adapter transmits data onto the network and receives data from the network.  to ensure that data moves smoothly from the storage subsystems to the network.

The server supports the Microsoft Windows See Windows.

NT Server and Novell NetWare (operating system, networking) Novell NetWare - Novell, Inc.'s proprietary networking operating system for the IBM PC.

NetWare uses the IPX/SPX, NetBEUI or TCP/IP network protocols. It supports MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, OS/2, Macintosh and Unix clients.
operating systems. Meridian Data bundles its award-winning CD Net(R) software for both Windows NT Server and NetWare to provide high-end CD and DVD system management, networking and performance acceleration capabilities.

To increase the performance of CD and DVD-based applications, the TNT Server 2000 provides a hard drive caching feature that improves random access times 600% or more (under 10ms) while increasing sustained data transfer rates 100% or more (over 8MB per second).

Caching CDs on hard disk optimizes performance for data-intensive applications such as multi-media, and allows the end user to experience smooth playback.

Meridian CD Net Software

CD Net software tightly integrates CD-ROM drives with the operating system, supporting high-end features such as network security, multiple protocols and high-performance RAM cache.

The server presents CDs or DVDs as standard network volumes which may be accessed from any compatible network client, including WEB browsers. Multiple CDs may be mapped to a single drive letter allowing users to conserve valuable network resources that can be assigned to other applications or devices.

Meridian TNT Server Configurations

The base server configuration for the Meridian TNT Server 2000 includes a 400MHz Pentium II processor, 128MB of 100MHz SDRAM, an auto-sensing 10/100 Ethernet network interface, a minimum of four SCSI SCSI

channels and a 9.1GB SCSI-III hard disk drive. The system can be upgraded to 384MB of RAM and alternative network interface adapters are optional.

Servers may be configured in either a free-standing tower or sturdy rack mountable modules which are designed for industry-standard 19" rack systems. The rack mount modules include options for dual redundant hot-swappable power supplies and fans and hot-swappable drive bays.

The TNT Server 2000 supports up to 10 SCSI channels. Using the optional external expansion cabinets as many as nine SCSI channels can be allocated for CD and DVD device support, providing connection for up to 63 devices simultaneously in any combination of CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

or Meridian Data Ultimate modules. Meridian Ultimate modules support five CD-ROMs at hard disk speeds.

Using 9.1GB hard disks, system hard disk capacity can be expanded up to 163GB in the rack mount configuration and up to 100GB in the tower configuration.

When configured with the optional Ultimate modules, and the maximum amount of system hard disk, the TNT Server 2000 can support at least 375 CD-ROMs cached to hard disk. When configured with the optional 150-disc CD jukebox the system has a capacity of at least 525 CD-ROMs (341GB).

Pricing and Availability

The Meridian TNT Server 2000 is now available through Meridian's worldwide network of distributors and value-added resellers. Suggested retail pricing for a Meridian TNT Server 2000 in a tower configuration consisting of 14 32X CD-ROM drives, 10/100 Ethernet, 128MB of RAM and 9.1GB system hard disk drive is $11,986.

A rack mountable server with 128MB of RAM, 10/100 Ethernet and 9.1GB system hard disk drive providing redundant power supplies, audio/visual power alarms and 14 hot-swappable CD-ROM drives is $17,909 suggested retail.
