A merger between Shawnee County and the city of Topeka in Kansas will be voted on by residents toward the end of this year. If the two park and recreation departments are merged, it would mean a tax increase of about $71 for a $100,000 home outside the city limits and a decrease of about $32 on a $100,000 home inside the city. If the park and recreation merger is not attached to the plan, the newly established governing body could then decide whether to merge the two municipal departments.
