Merger creates packaging giant.


On Feb. 6, Montreal-based Alcan Inc. acquired French-based Pechiney Pechiney SA was a major aluminum conglomerate based in France until it was acquired in 2003 by the Alcan corporation headquartered in Canada.

Prior to its acquisition, Pechiney grew to be the world's 4th largest producer and developer of aluminum products, employing 34,000

. Alcan merged the PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using  operations into the existing Alcan Packaging subsidiary.

The combination of Alcan Packaging and PPP operations ha8 created a global packaging giant having $5.8 billion in annual revenues, some 35,000 employees and 190 worldwide facilities, 65 of them in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. . PPP had operated four blow molding and 15 film extrusion plants in North America.

"Alcan Packaging becomes a much larger and more balanced global packaging force as a result of this deal," says a spokesman for Alcan Inc.
