Memory packaging innovation from Dynamem doubles and quadruples laptop DRAM.

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 15, 1995--Two new flexible circuit memory modules from Dynamem Inc. offer dramatic memory increases for portable and laptop computers.

Dynamem's new 32 MB and 64 MB memory modules utilize the patented foldable Rigid Assembly Memory Module (FRAMM FRAMM Foldable Ridged Assembly Memory Module

(TM) technology to double and quadruple laptop memory in the same physical space as the industry standard 16 MB Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module See DIMM.

(storage) Dual In-line Memory Module - Small circuit boards carrying memory integrated circuits, with signal and power pins on both sides of the board, in contrast to single-in-line memory modules (SIMM).
(SODIMM (Small Outline-DIMM) A DIMM module with a thinner profile due to the use of TSOP chip packages. SODIMMs are commonly used in laptop computers. See memory module and TSOP. ).

"Most portable computers have the capacity for only one memory card providing 16 MB of DRAM, which limits effective use of memory-intensive applications, such as high-end graphics programs," said Gary Smith, president, Dynamem. "Our new 32 MB and 64 MB FRAMM modules meet today's increased memory requirements while responding to the space constraints of portables and laptops. And, because they are manufactured as a single unit, FRAMM modules are a less expensive option than using multiple DIMMs."

The new FRAMM modules are designed to provide portable system developers increased memory at an affordable price point. The company plans to work with portable system manufactures to provide this capability in new product offerings.

Currently, most laptop and portable computers use proprietary memory boards with no industry standard, therefore they can be difficult to upgrade. With FRAMM technology, 32 and 64 MB FRAMM-based SODIMMs will be available, surpassing currently available memory density, within the same physical dimensions, and with industry standard pin arrangement. And FRAMMs will meet the memory needs of future machines utilizing 64-bit processors.

Dynamem's FRAMM technology combines memory chips encapsulated in a Thin Small Outline Package (TSOP (Thin Small Outline Package) A very thin, plastic, rectangular surface mount chip package with gull-wing pins on its two short sides. TSOPs are about a third as thick as SOJ chips. See gull-wing lead, SOP, SOJ and chip package. ) with a folded, multilayer rigid flexible circuit card. The result is a module with four surface areas of memory, instead of the maximum of two available surfaces in a Single In-Line Memory Module See SIMM.

(storage) Single In-line Memory Module - (SIMM) A small circuit board or substrate, typically about 10cm x 2cm, with RAM integrated circuits or die on one or both sides and a single row of pins along one long edge.
(SIMM) or the Dual In-Line Memory Module (DIMM (Dual In-Line Memory Module) A printed circuit board that holds memory chips and plugs into a DIMM socket on the motherboard. See memory module.

). A single FRAMM provides as much memory as multiple SIMMs or DIMMs stacked together, but with the same physical dimensions as only one of these traditional modules. And, FRAMMs use a standard 72-pin or 168-pin plug-in arrangement that fits into personal computers, laptops, servers and workstations.

Limited quantities of the 32 and 64 MB FRAMM modules will be available in the fourth quarter of 1995 with full production available in the first quarter of 1996.
