First published in 1981, and now in a new second edition containing portions of the manuscript manuscript, a handwritten work as distinguished from printing. The oldest manuscripts, those found in Egyptian tombs, were written on papyrus; the earliest dates from c.3500 B.C.  not present in the first edition, Memories of Afghanistan is the true testimony of one man's struggles with a handful of like-minded individuals to improve Afghanistan's future with the tools of science and technology. Growing up peniless, he became reform-minded and tried to help his nation on the road to democracy and better treatment of women, but the monarchy monarchy, form of government in which sovereignty is vested in a single person whose right to rule is generally hereditary and who is empowered to remain in office for life.  threatened him with arrest and execution.
