Memorial sculpture unveiled.The New York and Connecticut offices of LZA LZA - Leading Zero Anticipator Technology Division of Thornton-Tomasetti Group recently provided various services for a new two-ton, 15-foot-tall memorial sculpture of the late Congressman Reverend Dr. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. The sculpture was installed on the Plaza of the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building on the corner of 125th Street and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard in the Harlem section of Manhattan and unveilded recently by the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Memorial Committee, Inc. (ACPJMC) prior to an awards dinner held at City College Great Hall. Awardees included Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson (singer/song writers/music producers), Ed Lewis (Chairman/CEO Essence Communications) Sylvia Woods (restaurateur), Dr. Eugene Callender (Pastor, Christian Church for Spiritual Renewal) and Don King (sports promoter). The guest speaker for the Awards Dinner was Honorable Randy A. Daniels, Secretary of State, State of New York. An invitation-only crowd joined Honorary Chairs Congressman Charles B. Rangel; Hon. Percy E. Sutton; New York State Secretary of State Randy A. Daniels; President of the National Conference of Mayors James A. Garner; ACPJMC President Will Brown, Jr. and the Board of Directors to commemorate this great American hero and the dedication of the sculpture to the people of the State of New York. Invited guests included Governor George E. Pataki, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Dr. Reverend Calvin O. Butts, III, General Colin Powell, and other political officials, business leaders, celebrities and influential individuals. LZA Technology's work on the new sculpture of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., designed by sculptor Branly Cadet, included architectural, structural/electrical engineering services, and construction administration for the massive granite base of the sculpture, a large, oval-shaped pedestal that doubles as seating. The sculpture is lit from fixtures located in this base. Vice President David Peraza, P.E., Senior Project Manager Elizabeth Adams, AIA, Associate Robert Kornfeld, R.A., and Senior Engineer Pauline Stefan of Thornton-Tomasetti's LZA Technology Division headed up the expert team that coordinated the installation. LZA Technology Division has designed numerous supports for sculpture and artwork, both for lobbies of major buildings and for specific artists such as Walter De Maria and Christo Jeanne-Claude (de Guillebon), 1935–, b. Casablanca, studied Univ. of Tunis. The two met in Paris and moved to New York City in 1964. A leading figure in conceptual art, Christo, in collaboration with Jeanne-Claude, has specialized in large-scale temporary outdoor installations. Running Fence (1976), a shimmering fabric curtain, was strung more than 24 mi (39 km) across the rolling N California landscape.. Among these special projects are the Caesar Rodney Monument in Wilmington, DE; Floating World and the Sun Dial in Philadelphia, PA; and the Verdi Monument, East River Roundabout and New York Korean Veterans Memorial in New York City. |
