WHAT: More than 600 veterans will attend the 86th Annual Reunion
of the Society of the 1st Infantry Division July 28 - 31 to
honor veterans and active-duty soldiers, attend a memorial
service and the regional unveiling of the U.S. Postal
Service's National World War II Memorial Stamp and tour the
First Division Museum and estate at Cantigny.
The 1st Infantry Division, also known as the "Big Red One", is
the Army's oldest division, having fought with distinction in
World War I, World War II, Vietnam and the Gulf War. Most of
the Division's units are currently deployed in Iraq.
The Big Red One reunion is co-sponsored by the Society of the
1st Infantry Division and the McCormick Tribune Foundation.
The foundation has a long history of supporting the Division.
It created the First Division Museum to commemorate the
history of the Big Red One. During World War I, Col. Robert R.
McCormick was commander of the 1st Battalion, 5th Field
Artillery, part of the 1st Infantry Division.
WHO: Special guest speakers and honorees include:
-- Keynote Speaker Richard Behrenhausen, president and CEO of the
McCormick Tribune Foundation (Stamp Dedication Ceremony)
-- Walter Ehlers, a 1st Infantry Division veteran of WWII and
Medal of Honor recipient (Stamp Dedication Ceremony and
Memorial Service)
-- Staff Sergeant Raymond Bittinger of Chicago, a 1st Infantry
Division member and a recipient of the Silver Star, given in
recognition of ''gallantry on the battlefield'' during the
April 9, 2004 attack on an Iraqi police station and the
governor's residence (Memorial Service)
-- 1st Infantry Division soldiers who have recently received
Purple Heart medals for wounds received in combat in Iraq
(Memorial Service)
