Membership qualifications prescribed by the Board of Directors. (Association Business).


The qualifications for membership in the American Physical Therapy Association The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is a national professional organization representing more than 66,000 members. Its goal is to foster advancements in physical therapy practice, research, and education.  shall be as stated in the Association Bylaws The rules and regulations enacted by an association or a corporation to provide a framework for its operation and management.

Bylaws may specify the qualifications, rights, and liabilities of membership, and the powers, duties, and grounds for the dissolution of an

A. Active Membership

1. Graduation Graduation is the action of receiving or conferring an academic degree or the associated ceremony. The date of event is often called degree day. The event itself is also called commencement, convocation or invocation.  from a physical therapy education program approved by:

a) the APTA APTA American Physical Therapy Association.  from 1926 to 1936, or

b) the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association American Medical Association (AMA), professional physicians' organization (founded 1847). Its goals are to protect the interests of American physicians, advance public health, and support the growth of medical science.  from 1936 to 1960, or

c) an agency recognized by the US Department of Education and/or and/or

B. Life Membership

1. Attainment of the age of 65 years and completion of 30 years of membership; or

2. If retired because of disability, completion of at least 2 years of membership.

C. Retired Active

1. Attainment of the age of 55 years and completion of 20 years of membership.

Member signs an official statement, at each dues period for which the individual is eligible for Retired Active, confirming he/she is no longer engaged in an occupation related to physical therapy practice, education, research, administration, or consultation, or for which physical therapy, education or licensure/certification is a requirement or credential.

D. Affiliate Affiliate

Relationship between two companies when one company owns substantial interest, but less than a majority of the voting stock of another company, or when two companies are both subsidiaries of a third company. See: Subsidiaries, parent company.
 Membership

1. Graduation from a physical therapist assistant education program approved by:

a) the APTA from 1967 to 1977 or

b) an agency recognized by the US Department of Education and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

2. Student members who have been converted to this category have 30 days following their student membership expiration date to take advantage of the 50% dues rate.

3. Previous student affiliate membership in the Association is neither a necessary nor a sufficient qualification for affiliate membership.

4. A signed pledge to comply with the Standards of Ethical eth·i·cal

If trained outside the United States, holding United States citizenship, a legal permit for permanent residence in the United States, or a legal permit to work in the United States, and graduation from an education program that by credentials evaluation is determined to be equivalent, with respect to physical therapist assistant entry level education in the United States.

Credentials Evaluation: Credentials evaluation can be performed by a recognized credentials evaluation service, a higher education institution, or a state physical therapist assistant licensing or regulatory agency.

E. Life Affiliate Membership

1. Attainment of the age of 65 years and completion of 30 years of membership or

2. If retired because of disability, completion of at least 2 years of membership.

F. Retired Affiliate

1. Attainment of the age of 55 years and completion of 20 years of membership.

Member signs an official statement, at each dues period for which the individual is eligible for Retired Affiliate, confirming she/he is no longer engaged in an occupation related to practice, education, research, administration, or consultation in physical therapy, or for which education or licensure/ certification in physical therapy is a requirement or credential.

G. Student Membership

1. Enrollment in a physical therapy education program that is accredited accredited

2. A signed pledge to comply with the Standards of Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Honorary Membership

Contributions are:

1. Significant to the field of physical therapy.

2. National in recognition and scope.

3. Beyond the scope of work done as part of paid employment.

4. Of unique quality.

J. Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the APTA

1. Demonstrated advancement A gift of money or property made by a person while alive to his or her child or other legally recognized heir, the value of which the person intends to be deducted from the child's or heir's eventual share in the estate after the giver's death.  of the profession of physical therapy in at least one of the domains of research, education, or practice.

2. National recognition by APTA members and by leaders outside the physical therapy profession, with full supporting documentation of achievements that have resulted in lasting contributions in at least two of the three domains of research, education, and practice.
