At our recent meeting of the American Road Race Medical Society, we stumbled across the excellent resource, Marathon Medicine (2001). This 340-page book, based on a conference at the Royal Society of Medicine and compiled in association with the London Marathon The London Marathon is a road marathon that has been held each year in London since 1981, usually in April. In addition to being one of the top five international marathons run over the traditional distance of 42. , examines the history, sociology, physiology, psychology and medical aspects of long-distance running long-distance running

In track and field, any foot race over 5,000 m in length. Marathons and cross-country running are also considered long-distance events. Women rarely ran in races beyond 3,000 m until the late 20th century.
