Beware of thin ice! Scientists have learned that many lakes in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  are thawing earlier each spring.

. The long-term trend: Between 1975 and 2004, lake ice began breaking up sooner in the year. On average, the spring thaw occurred days earlier each decade.

Benson says the likely culprit is global warming, or the average increase in Earth's temperature. "On some lakes it is getting to the point where they don't get ice on them at all in some winters," says Benson.

Each year, scientists record the date on which lakes thaw, counting the number of days after January 1 that the thaw occured. Look at the graph, below. Would you find the same trend as Benson if you only studied lake ice between 1995 and 2004? Explain.
