Melt away health.

They're not chocolate. They're not cream-filled. They're not huge. So you wouldn't expect Hickory Farms' Melt Away Mints to be worse than any other sugary, artificially colored and flavored candy. Ditto for the similar bulk-bin mints that seem to materialize in the supermarket every holiday season.

You'd be wrong. Each serving (just seven mints) has 210 calories and 11 grams of saturated fat--more than half a day's worth. That's worse than a standard Baby Ruth, Butterfinger, Heath, Hershey Bar Noun 1. Hershey bar - a bar of milk chocolate made by the Hershey company

The problem isn't chocolate. It's worse. After sugar, the second ingredient in the mints is partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil. Even non-hydrogenated palm kernel oil is 80 percent saturated. If you like mints, try a bag of York Peppermint Patties. Three patties weigh about 1 1/2 ounces--just like the seven Melt Away Mints. But the patties have only 160 calories and two grams of sat fat.

At least the York mints won't cost you a mint in health insurance.
