Meet the superheroes: here are the results of Science World's "Design a Superhero Challenge". (CONTEST SHOWCASE.


Last October, Science World invited students in grades 6 through 10 to use their imagination and science know-how to create a superhero su·per·he·ro

A figure, especially in a comic strip or cartoon, endowed with superhuman powers and usually portrayed as fighting evil or crime.
. Thousands of essays and drawings poured in, and our team of judges had a mind-boggling time selecting a winner from all of the terrific entries. Finally, we declared Flexy-Lexy, created by Sabina Swanson, age 13, the ultimate superhero.

As the grand-prize winner, Sabina will receive a special multidisc Superman DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

FLEXY-LEXY

IMMORTAL WIZARD BOY

SIGNATURE POWER: To "teleport" from one place to another, he swiftly transforms his body into gas molecules that disperse through the air. "Mind-mapping" skills allow him to penetrate the thoughts of bad guys, and change their evil plans into good ones.

JAGUAR-MAN

SIGNATURE POWER: He has the icy characteristics of his home: the dwarf planet Pluto. He came to Earth to fight global warming. With his "super freezy" hands, he lifts warm air upward, causing it to chill and condense into cooling rain clouds.

SANDMAN

ELECTRAN

CREATOR: Chelsea Julius, Immaculate Conception School, Somerville, New Jersey

SIGNATURE POWER: She rubs her super-rough hands together to generate static electricity. As the electricity builds up, lightning forms. She uses her hands to throw lightning bolts at the weapons of bank robbers to stop crime. Special DNA DNA: see nucleic acid.

SIGNATURE POWER: By rearranging his body's he can mold into any shape-including a giant bouncy ball to pounce on bad guys. He can stretch one arm to have tea with the Queen of England Noun 1. Queen of England - the sovereign ruler of England

SOUND GIRL

CREATOR: Alberta, Forest Ridge School, Gruver, Iowa

SIGNATURE POWER: She can hear up to a frequency of 600,000 hertz. Average humans can hear up to 20,000 Hz. To fight sound-hating Silence--her arch nemesis who steals voices from the innocent--Sound Girl generates sound waves that vibrate rapidly in Silence's ears. The intense noise makes him flee.

HYPERSONIA

CREATOR: Margeaux Settineri, Roger Ludlowe Middle School Roger Ludlowe Middle School (RLMS) is a co-educational secondary school located in Fairfield, Connecticut, United States. The school is named after Roger Ludlow, the founder of the Town of Fairfield. , Fairfield, Connecticut

SIGNATURE POWER: With just one push of her legs, she can take off and run or fly at a maximum speed of 5,000 miles per hour. She teams up with a time-traveling superhero and another with superstrength to form a crime-fighting trio.

INFERNO

CREATOR: Lacy McMurtrey, Big Spring Junior High School, Big Spring, Texas

SIGNATURE POWER: She excretes a flammable liquid and uses her hands, feet, and mouth to create fire. Born on the superhot planet Venus, she has adapted to withstand high temperatures; her internal organs are burn resistant. She reserves her powers to defend the defenseless.
