We barely had time to remember it as this issue went to press, but decided all the same that we should celebrate or at least give a little pat on the back to a magazine that has managed to stick around nationally and represent for racial justice with the voices and talents from communities of color not of the white race; - commonly meaning, esp. in the United States, of negro blood, pure or mixed. See also: Color . It's also worth remembering that we have a lot of work ahead of us. There's a contribution that journalists can make within social justice movements, and we have to do it by having clarity of purpose married to rigorous reporting and analysis. Yes, there's much to prove. And there's also much to look forward to. As I take on the job of editor and Rinku that of publisher, we'll be trying to improve upon the last four years and to add some new ideas "New Ideas" is the debut single by Scottish New Wave/Indie Rock act The Dykeenies. Rinku Sen, Publisher The new year brought me the excitement and anticipation of a new job. In March, I'll move to New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of from Oakland as the publisher of ColorLines. We hope that moving a portion of the operation to New York will help ColorLines achieve greater quality and scope, allowing us to work with a larger pool of organizers, thinkers, and writers on the critical issues facing communities of color. With a presence on both coasts, we can identify a wider range of trends and ideas that deserve more space here and in the national discourse. I encourage our readers, contributors, and colleagues to get in touch with your ideas, praise, and criticism. I'm entering journalism for the same reasons I became an organizer. When I joined the staff of the Center for Third World Organizing so long ago in 1988, I was following the lead set by the editors of Freedam's Journal, the country's first black newspaper. They wrote in 1827, "We wish to plead our own cause. Too long have others spoken for us." What I have valued most about ColorLines has been its place as a forum for people of color Noun 1. people of color - a race with skin pigmentation different from the white race (especially Blacks) people of colour, colour, color race - people who are believed to belong to the same genetic stock; "some biologists doubt that there are important to analyze our own situations, advocate our own solutions, and ask the questions that we think are most important. The voices represented in our pages oppose those of our rightwing counterparts--the D'Souzas, the Connerlys, and the Rices. Given their profile in the world today, people of color have to develop a sophisticated, creative, and real response to increasingly complicated expressions of white supremacy white supremacist n. I look forward to that project with an urgency fueled by war and death. Life is short, and we all have to do our part while we can. |
