LWVUS LWVUS League of Women Voters of the United States  Lobby Corps has played a key role in promoting League issues on Capitol Hill. With strong support from Lucy Benson Lucy Benson was a fictional character on the long-running Channel 4 British television soap opera Hollyoaks.

She was played by actress Kerrie Taylor between 1995-2000.

Lucy was Kurt's younger sister and the middle child in the Benson family.
, LWVUS president (1968-74), League Action Committee (today's Advocacy Committee) Chair Cynthia Hannum founded the Lobby Corps in 1970. Hannum recognized that this type of political activity was a natural fit for the League, and brought it to fruition.

Today's Lobby Corps draws some 20 volunteers from Leagues in the Washington, DC, area. They meet monthly for a briefing at the LWVUS office. Volunteer lobbyists receive background information, talking points and individual assignments for key Senators and Representatives. They communicate the League's positions to members of Congress, and then report back to the M Street office.

"Each time the Lobby Corps lobbies on the Hill, we win," declares current Lobby Corps Chair Carole Conors. "Lobby Corps members advance the League's position on specific legislation in a moderate and reasoned fashion, demonstrating the quality of the League's work and providing members of Congress with detailed material to inform their votes."

Using this measured approach, the Lobby Corps complemented other League efforts to win passage of the National Voter Registration Voter registration is the requirement in some democracies for citizens to check in with some central registry before being allowed to vote in elections. An effort to get people to register is known as a voter registration drive. Centralized/compulsory vs.  Act ("Motor Voter"), the McCain-Feingold Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 (BCRA, McCain–Feingold Act, Pub.L. 107-155, 116 Stat. 81, enacted 2002-03-27) is United States federal law that amended the Federal Election Campaign Act, which regulates the financing of political campaigns.  and the Help America Vote Act The Help America Vote Act (HAVA, Pub.L. 107-252) is a United States federal law passed the House 357-48 and 92-2 in the Senate[1] and was signed into law by President Bush on October 29, 2002. . It has worked for legislation as diverse as the Patients' Bill of Rights, stronger clean air standards, a ban on assault weapons and ratification of the Chemical Weapons Convention Noun 1. Chemical Weapons Convention - a global treaty banning the production or acquisition or stockpiling or transfer or use of chemical weapons .

In this 109th Congress, Lobby Corps members are going to the Hill on key "Democracy Agenda" issues, as well as other League legislative issues. Thus far, they have lobbied opposing the so-called "Clear Skies Clear Skies could refer to:
  • Clear Skies Act of 2003 and 2005 in the United States
  • Clear Skies microgeneration programme in the United Kingdom
" bill that would gut the Clean Air Act, supporting the "527" Reform Act, opposing privatizing Social Security, and supporting the SAFE Act and the scheduled expiration of the more troubling provisions of the Patriot Act.

Complementing this vital one-on-one work of dedicated Lobby Corps volunteers is the online activism of the League's Grassroots Lobby Corps. The members of the Grassroots Lobby Corps have sent thousands of personal e-mail messages and made countless phone calls to Congress. The work of both groups is invaluable. "Everyone can join the Grassroots Lobby Corps and make a difference in just a few minutes every month," notes LWVUS Grassroots Lobbyist Angela Canterbury.
