Seven members vie for AASA AASA American Association of School Administrators
AASA Asian American Student Association
AASA Association of Academies of Sciences in Asia
AASA Aging and Adult Services Administration
AASA Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Army
 officer, board positions

Four AASA members are candidates for the association's president-elect position and three others are seeking to fill the two seats on the Executive Committee.

Voting among AASA members will take place by mail immediately following the 1999 National Conference on Education, Feb. 19-22, in New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded . Candidates will make formal statements during campaign events at the conference to present their views on education and the association's leadership.

Election results will be posted at AASA Online (www.aasa.org) on March 5.

A runoff election for the presidential berth will be conducted by mail ballot in mid-March if none of the four candidates receives at least 50 percent of the votes. Those results will be available at AASA Online on April 1.

Candidates for Executive Committee

BARBARA ERWIN (Entity Relationship for WINdows) A data modeling program for Windows from Computer Associates. It allows the database schemas to be built graphically and turns the graphs into the appropriate SQL code for creating PowerBuilder, DB2, Oracle, Sybase and other databases.  

Currently: Superintendent, Allen Independent School District Allen Independent School District is a public school district based in Allen, Texas (USA).

Allen ISD covers most of the city of Allen and a portion of the city of Parker.

Toughest decision in last year: Any decisions I make that relate to individual students, but on a global level the redistricting redistricting: see legislative apportionment.  of attendance boundaries.

JOHN W. JORDAN

Currently: Superintendent, Oxford Public School District, Oxford, Miss.

Best professional day: Notification by a research-based public school support organization affiliated with Mississippi State University that our district was ranked No. 1 in Mississippi based on academic achievement and state accreditation level.

Toughest decision in past year: My recommendation to the board of trustees board of trustees Politics The posse of thugs who oversee an institution's administration. See Board of directors.  that laid out a procedure to expel repeat offenders of the district's discipline code.

. Even in the best situations, educational leadership can be lonely and isolated. AASA provides friendships and affiliations that counsel and assure educators during the more difficult moments.

Best professional day: The recent opening day of our new high school, which captures the technological requirements of the 21* century and reflects an architectural design representative of a changing society and economy.

Toughest decision in past year: To systematically reduce class size. While students will be the benefactors, the rate of compensation increases for staff members will be decelerated. Even so, a majority of teachers supported the decision.

Toughest decision in past year: Which writing method to emphasize: Italic or D'Nelian? I've received more correspondence on an issue only once in my 28 years of administrative experience.

Greatest value of AASA membership: AASA has given me tremendous opportunities for networking with other superintendents from across the country as we face the challenges that come with education in today's society. This sharing of ideas and strategies makes us all stronger.

Best professional day: When we received news that two campuses with 95 percent minority and 78 percent low socioeconomic students achieved exemplary ratings from the Texas Education Agency. This effectively removed all excuses from those with reservations about student capabilities.

Toughest decision in past year: Hiring a candidate from outside the district to replace a popular retiring high school principal. The favored replacement was an internal candidate. I deemed it best for all parties to hire from outside. So far, it's working well, but it was a very tough decision.

Greatest value of AASA membership: To be part of any organization that not only believes in children but that provides leadership networking to enhance one's ability to better serve the education needs of children.

Best professional day: Watching Danny graduate last spring after personally intervening to ensure he received academic support, without which he would not have walked.

Toughest decision in past year: Reassigning a veteran principal with a large and politically influential following to a noninstructional position because his lack of action put children in harm's way.

Greatest value of AASA membership: The opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues at the national conference about programs that would enhance my students' educational experiences. AASA publications also are helpful.

Best professional day: After defending my doctoral dissertation, I returned to the district office where staff staged an exhilarating celebration. That evening at a board meeting, the trustees, unaware of my doctoral defense, could not understand why I was so relaxed and confident.

Toughest decision in past year: School closing or early dismissal decisions in the face of inclement in·clem·ent
