CBSHealthWatch's new look features a consumer-friendly home page, easier navigation and an enhanced search engine. Specifically, the site introduces "Smart Search," a feature that allows users to refine their searches and quickly locate the information most relevant to them. Smart Search is one of the most important upgrades made to CBSHealthWatch. It enables consumers to specify the type of information they seek, using parameters that include subject, media type, publication date, level of complexity, age and gender.

"More than half of consumer health searches on the Web are for topic-specific information, most of it in particular diseases," said Glynna Prentice, executive editor for CBSHealthWatch. "Smart Search lets consumers obtain precise, relevant results in a very user-friendly, intuitive way."

Developed by Medscape, one of the most recognized clinical Web sites for healthcare professionals, CBSHealthWatch provides users with a broad range of information related to a specific health topic or disease through its 48 "Topic Centers." In addition, feature content is available in three levels - basic, advanced, expert - to meet the needs of individuals with different levels of knowledge.
- Basic content gives users a general overview of a health topic

- Advanced content provides users with more in-depth information about the
latest developments in specific health topics

- Expert content supplies users with information designed for healthcare
professionals through search engines such as MEDLINE and AIDSLINE, databases of
medical abstracts and specific HIV/AIDS research and treatment, respectively.

"CBSHealthWatch provides the most comprehensive resource of information for consumers based on their informational needs and actually goes `beyond the basics' to provide them access to advanced and expert level content," said Tammy Lewis, senior vice president, Marketing for Medscape. "It's features like these that differentiate us from other health Web sites."

Maintaining Web Leadership

"In today's market, probably the two largest drivers of consumer use of the Internet for health information are the quality and the trustworthiness trustworthiness Ethics A principle in which a person both deserves the trust of others and does not violate that trust  of content. Some sites have become much larger and more sophisticated in design and scope, but not necessarily better. We pride ourselves on the scope and credibility of the information our portals offer our audience."

While the new site has been designed and built from the ground up to include migration to the new Medscape corporate platform standard (Sun Microsystems/Oracle Corporation/Java) and implementation of leading-edge commercial engines, CBSHealthWatch will maintain those features that have driven consumers to the site. The site will continue to offer original editorial content, daily health news and features, online discussion boards, searchable directories and databases and interactive tools.

Medscape, which produces, hosts and maintains CBSHealthWatch, undertook this effort to ensure that it will remain one of the leaders of the consumer health portal category. This effort is designed to uphold up·hold
