Authored by cardiologist Mark Reisman, director of cardiovascular research and the cardiac catheterization lab at Swedish Heart Institute in Seattle, and Swedish cardiologist William Gray, the study notes the use of Microvision's Nomad(TM) Personal Display System during a procedure called patent foramen ovale patent foramen ovale PFO Cardiology An opening between the left and right atria which allows blood to bypass the lungs in utero; the FO normally closes shortly after birth, but remains open in up to 20%; a PFO is, in absence of other cardiac defects, is of no consequence  (PFO PFO Patent Foramen Ovale (defect of the heart)

According to the study, doctors used the Nomad system - which utilizes Microvision's retinal scanning technology - to place an image equivalent to a 19 inch computer monitor just two feet from the viewer. In each of the 11 PFO procedures, the Nomad system allowed the physician to observe the optimal position of the PFO fabric seal. This placement was confirmed by the echocardiographer, and consistently preceded the observation by other team members.

Specific results of this series will be presented at the MMVR conference, scheduled for Jan. 23-26 in Newport Beach, CA.

The Nomad system utilizes a bright red laser diode display that contrasts with the grayscale In computing, a grayscale or greyscale digital image is an image in which the value of each pixel is a single sample. Displayed images of this sort are typically composed of shades of gray, varying from black at the weakest intensity to white at the strongest, though in  of the fluoroscope fluoroscope (flr`əskōp), instrument consisting of an X-ray machine (see X ray) and a fluorescent screen that may be used by physicians to view the internal organs of the body. , allowing a clear differentiation of both images, potentially enhancing the speed, accuracy and safety of clinical decisions based on images, according to David Ormerod, medical segment manager for Microvision.

Microvision expects to introduce the Nomad system - its first commercial product utilizing retinal scanning display technology - by the end of 2001.
