Mediation will be offered as an option to HOME clients who have claims of bias against property owners/managers. Both sides must agree to mediate. If mediation fails to resolve the dispute, both parties are free to pursue court actions or administrative complaints.

The mediation project will be governed by a volunteer board comprised of three appointees from HOME and three appointees from GCNKAA. "This collaboration between a Fair Housing advocacy group and an apartment association is unique. We have always supported safe, fair, quality housing and this will be a win for everyone involved," said Mark Franks, executive vice president of GCNKAA.

Charles Tassell, director of governmental affairs for GCNKAA, said, "This partnership and mediation board will help move this region beyond our current litigious litigious adj. referring to a person who constantly brings or prolongs legal actions, particularly when the legal maneuvers are unnecessary or unfounded. Such persons often enjoy legal battles, controversy, the courtroom, the spotlight, use the courts to punish  state and make strides toward solving very real problems one issue at a time."

Karla Irvine, executive director of HOME, said she, "considers it another weapon in HOME's arsenal to fight housing discrimination. Mediated settlements can often provide broader relief to victims of discrimination than court actions. We are very grateful to Seasongood for seeing the merit of this pilot project."
