Media Advisory: News Conference CEUDA Releases Northgate Report.MONTREAL -- The Customs Excise Union Douanes Accise (CEUDA CEUDA Customs Excise Union Douanes Accise (Canadian Labour Union) ) retained The Northgate Group in July 2005 to conduct an extensive study of whether the risks inherent in the duties of Border Services Officers A Border Services Officer is a law enforcement agent employed by the Canada Border Services Agency. BSOs are designated peace officers in Canada, and primarily enforce customs and immigration-related legislation, in particular the Customs Act and the Immigration and Refugee , Regional Intelligence Officers and Customs Investigators would justify the issuance of side-arms. The Northgate Study was centered on extensive interviews of Front Line Officers in all regions of the country, and included intensive review of related and third party materials. The Northgate Group Study will be made public tomorrow. From this Study, 31 recommendations are presented in an effort to enhance officer safety and improve border security for Canadians. The Study also uncovered disturbing evidence of CBSA CBSA Canada Border Services Agency CBSA Core-Based Statistical Area CBSA Colorado BioScience Association CBSA College-Bound Student-Athlete CBSA Corporate Benefit Services of America CBSA Canadian Blind Sports Association CBSA Canadian Billiards & Snooker Association conduct aimed at misleading the public on the need for the issuance of sidearms as well as practices that potentially create significant public safety and security shortfalls. Aside from calling for implementation of the recommendations, CEUDA is also taking the extraordinary step of asking the Auditor General of Canada The role of the Auditor General of Canada is to aid accountability by conducting independent audits of federal government operations. The Auditor General reports to the House of Commons, not to the government. to investigate the institutional integrity and operational competence of CBSA both of which potentially compromise the safety and security of not only Customs Officers customs officer n → aduanero/a, funcionario/a de aduanas customs officer customs n → douanier m customs officer but also of Canadian society.
