The search began in December to recruit a coordinator to lead the much-talked about project into a business case phase. The city is home to the federal Great Lakes Great Lakes, group of five freshwater lakes, central North America, creating a natural border between the United States and Canada and forming the largest body of freshwater in the world, with a combined surface area of c.95,000 sq mi (246,050 sq km). It's undetermined whether the institute will be either attached to a new Sault hospital, located within the Great Lakes Forestry Centre or be a tenant in a future research park. The coordinator will also be responsible for working with research scientists, developing strategy plans and pursuing partnership opportunities. Northern Ontario has a land area of 802,000 km² (310,000 mi²) and constitutes 87% of the land area of Ontario, although it , identified the Sault as the best-positioned community to serve as NOSM's research centre. Ross expects a "solid business proposal" for a future institute to be in place by mid-2007 to present to government funding agencies. "The top priority is who's going to be the researchers doing the studies involved with it," says Ross. "That's the excitement and we've got a lot of people identified who want to participate." One likely researcher will be Dr. Sylvana Spadafora, a local oncologist Oncologist A physician specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer Mentioned in: Retinoblastoma oncologist , who's been pushing the idea of a clinical research partnership with NOSM. Ross says cancer research is one of many focuses of the institute. In the future, Ross has high hopes of establishing a bio-prospecting centre in the Sault. The Great Lakes Forestry Centre is where a team of researchers have compiled a library of thousands of plant compounds from the Northern boreal forest boreal forest Noun the forest of northern latitudes, esp. in Scandinavia, Canada, and Siberia, consisting mainly of spruce and pine [Latin boreas the north wind] . The archived material could lead to the discovery of new drugs for fighting cancer, treating neurode-generative diseases like Parkinson's or possibly develop painkilling medications. The library could ultimately have far-reaching commercial potential for pharmaceutical companies. The most successful example of bio-prospecting is the discovery of Taxol, a drug used in cancer treatment which is derived from Canada Yew, a naturally-grown plant in Northern Ontario. Researchers believe there are many other similar plant compounds in the North which have anti-oxidant activity. "We've got a pretty good idea of what the opportunities are and it's huge," says Ross. "But now it's a matter of how do we capitalize on Cap´i`tal`ize on` v. t. 1.
