Mecanoo: Marnix sports centre, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The original 1955 Marnix swimming pool will be replaced by Marnix Sports Centre. With two swimming pools, it will include a sports hall, a fitness/aerobics studio, and cafe with terrace. A smaller building level with the entrance hall, has offices and a kitchen below the fitness/aerobics areas. The facade facing the Marnixstraat is constructed from red/orange masonry, with segments of glass and aluminium, while the translucent facade of the sports hall juts out over the Singel canal, recalling the form of the original swimming pool. This space will give swimmers in the competition pool fantastic water level views over the Singel canal. R. G.
