Here's something to save a little wear and tear on your tastebuds --not to mention waistline.

NON-BURGER BASICS

While some veggieburgers still try to fool your tastebuds into thinking you're eating beef, a new generation of products couldn't care less.

Gardenburgers, for example, are made mostly of mushrooms. They're delicious on a bun with tomato, onion, lettuce, and ketchup.

Even "extra lean" beef gets more than half its calories from fat. And six of its 14 grams of fat are the artery-clogging saturated kind. Oh yeah. Meat has no fiber.

BURGERS IN RATING

Here are the taste test results for all of the "Best Bites" and "Honorable Mentions" we could get. We prepared them according to the package directions, baking, microwaving, or frying them in a non-stick pan with no oil.

We've divided the burgers into groups, based on their main ingredients. Within each group, products are listed from best tasting to worst.

VEGETABLE

* Gardenburger. Frozen. If you're not looking for Looking for

FAKE MEAT (soy or wheat protein)

* Midland Harvest Burger 'N Loaf. Mix. Hamburgery taste and texture. Enough added vitamins and minerals to match ground beef.

* Midland Harvest Harvest Burgers or Green Giant Harvest Burgers. Frozen. Burger 'N Loaf with water added and formed into patties. Green Giant should be in supermarkets by fall.

* Whole Earth Burger Mix. Mix. Similar to Burger'N Loaf.

* Yves Veggie Cuisine Burger Burgers. Refrigerated re·frig·er·ate

* Sun Burgers Wheat Meat. Frozen. A reminder of how bad canned meat substitutes used to be.

* La Loma Vege-Burger. Canned. A reminder of how bad canned meat substitutes still are.

GRAIN

* Nature's Burger, Original. Mix. Nice flavor and not-overly-strong spicing.

* Amy's Organic California Veggie Burger. Frozen. Bland.

* Sweet Earth Vegeburgers, Grain. Refrigerated. Tastes like the bread you put it between.

* White Wave Veggie Life Burger. Refrigerated. A little too sour for our taste.

TOFU & TEMPEH

* Mandarin Cajun Garden Patties. Refrigerated. Hot but good flavor. Added soy fiber means ten grams per patty.

* Ken & Robert's Veggie Burger. Frozen. Tasteless.

* Turtle Island Foods Turtle Island Foods is the company which produces Tofurky, a popular vegetarian and vegan alternative to turkey, as well other meatless products. All are vegan and approved by the UK Vegan Society, and most are kosher-certified by the Kosher Services of America.  SuperBurgers or Lightlife American Grill Tempeh Burgers. Frozen. The tempeh (fermented soybean soybean, soya bean, or soy pea, leguminous plant (Glycine max, G. soja, or Soja max) of the family Leguminosae (pulse family), native to tropical and warm temperate regions of Asia, where it has been  cake) was too sour for our tastebuds.
