Measurement of Joint Motions: A Guide to Goniometry, 2nd ed.

Norkin CC, White DJ. Philadelphia, PA 19103-1493, FA Davis Co., 1995, 241 pp. illus, $21.95.

The second edition of this well-respected text has added information regarding varied topics in the first version. Norkin and White have organized their information in relation to specific joints. Under the heading of a specific joint (eg, the glenohumeral joint The glenohumeral joint, commonly known as the shoulder joint, is a synovial ball and socket joint and involves articulation between the glenoid fossa of the scapula (shoulder blade) and the head of the humerus (upper arm bone). ), the authors have listed information al)out joint structure, osteokinematics, arthrokinematics, and the capsular cap·su·lar

Of, relating to, or resembling a capsule.

Adj. 1. capsular - resembling a capsule; "the capsular ligament is a sac surrounding the articular cavity of a freely movable joint and attached to the bones"
pattern of the joint. This specific information is a new component to the book. Other new additions to the book include information regarding normal range-of-motion (ROM) values for each joint and specific joint ROM values needed for functional activities.

A goal of this text is to present current information regarding research that is related to goniometry goniometry /go·ni·om·e·try/ (go?ne-om´e-tre) the measurement of angles, particularly those of range of motion of a joint.

goniometry

the measurement of range of motion in a joint.

n.
1. An optical instrument for measuring crystal angles, as between crystal faces.

2. A radio receiver and directional antenna used as a system to determine the angular direction of incoming radio signals.
measurements of specific joints are also included. This is a great addition to the text. Another helpful addition is the inclusion of information regarding gravity-dependent goniometers (inclinometers), as some practitioners are now using these devices in spinal ROM measurements. The authors also have included research data about the pertinent affects of age and gender on specific joint ROMs.

The testing procedure for the goniometric measurements are listed for each joint, with clear instructions for each test. Pictures of the testing procedures are included for each joint. The testing procedures are described and demonstrated well so that it is easy to perform the objective measurement properly.

The goal of this new edition is to update the information regarding goniometry, and present new research since the first edition was published in 1985. The authors have accomplished this goal. The text is a comprehensive source of information on goniometry and includes many references used in the compilation of the material.
