Me and my travels

My first trip abroad was to ...

India when I was eight. I was Savarla (a miniature best man/mascot) at my uncle's wedding. I rode on a white horse with him, leading musicians and relatives through a north Indian village called Nabha. Very cool.

The best place I've ever been was ...

Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro, city, Brazil
Rio de Janeiro (rē`ō də zhänā`rō, Port. rē` thĭ zhənĕē`r
. I got to visit some of the top samba schools in the favelas (shanty towns) and check out ritual ceremonies in the Amazon. I was working with members of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra and experiencing the warm hospitality of my pop star-come-tour guide, aka Sting!

The thing I hate about travel is ...

How little leg- and elbow-room you get in economy class. A couple of years ago I was on a flight back from New York New York, state, United States

My most treasured souvenir is ...

My copy of Long Walk to Freedom signed by Nelson Mandela Noun 1. Nelson Mandela - South African statesman who was released from prison to become the nation's first democratically elected president in 1994 (born in 1918)

My idea of paradise is ...

Having a late-night conversation with friends over a drink in a hotel bar after a blinding gig. It's great to feel that you have played to an appreciative crowd and can share that experience with people who can empathise.

I never travel without ...

An exercise band. These are fantastic for DIY DIY

weight training and staying in shape while sitting in boring airport terminals, backstage areas and under-equipped hotel gyms. I first got into using these a couple of years ago when I was staying in a hotel in Deia, Mallorca, called La Residencia. The yoga and Pilates instructor swore by them and I was quite shocked at how effective they were. I am used to using free weights so it came as a surprise that a tiny and extremely portable rubber band could achieve the same effect.

My top travel tip is ...

Check in online to get the best seats available and wear smart clothes to maximise your chance of an upgrade. I always go for an aisle seat aisle seat aisle nplace f côté couloir

aisle seat n (on plane
as you never know who might be next to you and it's quite possible they may get touchy at being disturbed (if you have a weak bladder).

My favourite hotel is ...

My most memorable meal was in ...

The great majority of the region belongs to the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve, the largest aboriginal reservation in Australia. , Australia, where I ate with my Aboriginal friends of the Yolngu Clan at the Garma Festival back in 2003.

When I'm travelling I always miss ...

My recording studio. Over the years, I have created my ideal recording situation by buying lots of the equipment I used to dream about in my youth.
