McMurry's Copy Editor newsletter hits pay dirt with first workshop, plans six more this year. (Workshops).

The editorial sessions at the Newsletter & Electronic Publishers Association's annual conference in Washington, D.C., have never proved to be the most popular ones presented (although many of them have been quite valuable), ranking somewhere just above sessions on newsletter design.

Editorial Experts Inc. (EEI EEI Edison Electric Institute

Last month, though, McMurry Newsletters, publisher of Copy Editor, staged a one-day workshop, "Grammar, Usage and Style," in New York New York, state, United States

Enthusiasm was so high that the company is beginning a national workshop tour this year, in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , Washington, D.C., Chicago, Boston, and Phoenix, McMurry's hometown.

Since McMurry purchased Copy Editor two or three years ago, it has aggressively sought to expand and solidify its franchise (along with other plans to acquire and launch more newsletters). Its new editor, Boston-based Barbara Wallraff, is one of the country's leading grammar experts, senior editor at Atlantic Monthly, for which she writes the popular backpage "Word Court" and "Word Fugitives" columns, and the author of the best-selling best·sell·er also best seller

While the New York workshop was divided into two half-day sessions, the future ones will be full-day offerings. "This will, in fact," Wallraff told NL/NL, "strengthen my presentation, because I'll be able to discuss online resources along with print ones, where they logically belong rather than splitting everything technological off from resources on paper.

"People also wanted more in-depth material about grammar and usage, and more time for their own language questions, which I'll be able to provide in a full-day workshop.

"And a quiz that everyone took and then we discussed got an excellent response, so I'm planning to add more practical exercises like that, to make the day as varied and engaging and hands-on as possible," she said.

The fee is $329 and registration is limited to 50 participants.
