Ray's North Beach Restaurant, they had a working title in mind: "Smoke and Mirrors."

The room, which has been remodeled into a lounge for the McDonald, recently opened to the public. With ample mirrors, plush custom carpeting and an outdoor smoking area, the still-unnamed 2,000 square-foot room lives up to its initial title.

"We realized we were short on lobby space, that was always the Achilles' heel of the theater," said Kit Kesey, the operator of the McDonald, 1010 Willamette St. "We wanted a place where, no matter what kind of crowd was in it, people would feel comfortable."

Kesey worked with Arbor arbor

In addition to a live video feed of concerts happening in the theater, the new lounge offers a full bar and ample seating. The carpet, which was custom-made in Millkin, Ga., features an egg-and-dart pattern that mimics a design found on the outside of the theater building.

The lounge will be open only when concerts are happening in the theater.

Vet's Club

Before it closed its doors in November of 2000, the Vet's Club, 1626 Willamette St., was a local live-music mainstay. Now it's back up and running as a full-service restaurant, Mac's at the Vet's Club, and will host music once again.

At least initially, you probably won't see the Cherry Poppin' Daddies show up at the club as they used to. Until the new restaurant gets off the ground, the plan is to have cover and dance bands play on Friday and Saturday nights, said owner Pat McCallum Pat McCallum (born September 6, 1969, in Edmonton, Alberta) is a curler. "I would like to think that we're going to offer a variety of music," McCallum said. "We don't want to be pigeonholed as having only one variety of music."

Christie & McCallum will perform at 10 p.m. today and Saturday at the Vet's Club. There is no cover.
