McDONNELL DOUGLAS RECEIVES $26.5 MILLION U.S. ARMY ORDER
FOR SPARE APACHE MAIN ROTOR BLADES
MESA, Ariz., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) has received a $26.5 million contract from the U.S. Army for spare AH-64 Apache main rotor blades.
Under the contract awarded to McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Co. last month, the Army will purchase 359 main rotor blades to restock its supply system. U.S. Army Apaches are stationed in the United States and Europe.
The current blade configuration, which has been in the field for two years, incorporates a series of design improvements that has made it more reliable. These blades have demonstrated a mean time between removal of nearly 6,000 hours -- four times the Army's 1,500-hour requirement.
Deliveries of the main rotor blades, which began last month, will continue into 1994.
The contract follows a $2.3 million award in October from the Army to McDonnell Douglas for 195 spare Apache tail rotor blades.
"We've been working closely with the U.S. Army to identify and correct concerns about the blades, and the latest improvements significantly enhance their reliability characteristics," said Erv Hunter, vice president of military programs at McDonnell Douglas Helicopter.
