 McDONNELL DOUGLAS LAUNCH VEHICLE LAUNCHES
THE DFS 3 KOPERNIKUS COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE
CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Today at 5:47 a.m. EDT a McDonnell Douglas Delta II launch vehicle launched the DFS 3 Kopernikus communications satellite for Deutsche Bundespost Telekom of Germany. DFS 3 joined two previously launched satellites, DFS 1 and DFS 2, in geostationary orbit to complete the DFS Kopernikus system, providing radio, television and data communications services throughout Germany.
Today's launch, Delta 215, is the 37th consecutive successful Delta mission. "Over the past 31 years Delta launch vehicles have established a solid history of reliability," said Rich Murphy, McDonnell Douglas mission director. "It's a tradition our whole team is proud of, and one we work hard to continue."
The DFS Kopernikus system, besides supporting existing terrestrial networks, offers a range of services anywhere in Germany irrespective of the state of development of the terrestrial networks. Additionally, DFS 3 is orbitally positioned to be able to support the telecommunications infrastructure in Eastern Europe. The DFS Kopernikus system was developed and constructed in Germany by ANT Bosch Telecom and Deutsche Aerospace within the R-DFS German industry consortium.
McDonnell Douglas Commercial Delta Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of McDonnell Douglas Government Aerospace, currently has four commercial launches on its manifest, including NATO IVB for NATO and the Mid-Course Space Experiment (MSX) for the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO), both scheduled for fourth quarter 1993; and Koreasat-1 and Koreasat-2 for Korea Telecom, set for second quarter and fourth quarter 1995, respectively.
