McDATA Sharpens Tools for ESCON to FICON Migration.

BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- New Firmware A category of memory chips that hold their content without electrical power. Firmware includes flash, ROM, PROM, EPROM and EEPROM technologies. When holding program instructions, firmware can be thought of as "hard software." See flash memory, ROM, PROM, EPROM, EEPROM and FOTA.  Enhancements for the McDATA Intrepid FICON (FIber CONnector) An IBM mainframe channel introduced with its G5 servers in 1998. Based on the Fibre Channel standard, it boosts the transfer rate of ESCON's half-duplex 17MB/sec to a full-duplex 100MB/sec.  Converter

McDATA Corporation (Nasdaq: MCDTA)(Nasdaq: MCDT MCDT Micro Credit Development Trust SACCO (Uganda microfinance)

), a leading provider of data access solutions, announced the general availability of new firmware for its unique Intrepid FICON Converter (IFC (Internet Foundation Classes) A class library from Netscape that provides an application framework and graphical user interface (GUI) routines for Java programmers. IFC was later made part of the Java Foundation Classes (JFC). See JFC, AFC and AWT. See also ICF. ), a cost-effective solution for attaching ESCON (Enterprise Systems CONnection) An IBM S/390 fiber-optic channel that transfers 17 Mbytes/sec over distances up to 60 km depending on connection type. ESCON allows peripheral devices to be located across large campuses and metropolitan areas.  peripherals directly to FICON channels.

The McDATA IFC is a key component of McDATA's portfolio of mainframe solutions and another tool to help customers get the most out of their existing SAN investments. By providing native FICON to ESCON protocol conversion, customers can enjoy the performance and scalability benefits of FICON, while reducing costs and protecting investments. This new firmware release provides additional solution support to meet various customer requirements for connectivity across campus, metro and wide area networks, including support for FICON direct attached, fabric attached and cascaded fabrics as well as extended ESCON fabrics using McDATA's USDX platform. In addition, this release provides support for additional devices, including ESCON director and NCR (NCR Corporation, Dayton, OH, www.ncr.com) A technology company specializing in financial terminal transactions, retail systems and data warehousing. Until the late 1990s, NCR was heavily invested in the hardware side of the industry, known worldwide as a major manufacturer of computers  Teradata support, and delivers significant improvements in system performance.

"McDATA continues to bring products and solutions to market that improve storage networking interoperability and extend the value of our customers' investments," said Raj Das, vice president of product marketing, McDATA. "With these new firmware enhancements, we deliver increased configuration flexibility and provide the solution support and performance required by our global mainframe customers."
