Its industries include metal fabrication, printing, and plastics manufacturing. Health-care giant Kaiser Permanente Kaiser Permanente is an integrated managed care organization, based in Oakland, California, founded in 1945 by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and physician Sidney R. Garfield. of Pasadena last week quietly awarded a $100 million-plus construction contract to the local subsidiary of St. Louis-based McCarthy Bros. Co. for a 240-bed Kaiser hospital in Baldwin Park, the Business Journal has learned. The deal represents the largest lump-sum contract ever won by McCarthy in its 126-year history, confirmed Michael Bolen, president of the Irvine-based subsidiary, McCarthy Western Constructors. Kaiser officials were unavailable for comment last week. Bolen attributed his company's successful bid to "very good pricing" from supportive subcontractors, which are hungry for work in the current recession, and to McCarthy's extensive health-care experience. Bolen said his company plans to break ground on the 725,000-square-foot hospital Oct. 1. Completion is slated for early 1995. The hospital, to be made of light-green aluminum and glass, will actually be the second phase of Kaiser's $225 million Baldwin Park Medical Center, in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. The second-phase hospital project is expected to provide a major shot-in-the-arm for the ailing local construction industry. Bolen reported his company plans to employ nearly 200 subcontractors and vendors for the job, and some 600 workers at peak construction. "The biggest challenge on this job will be handling the manpower; that's lot of people to keep track of," Bolen said. "Another challenge will be building a project of this size without adversely impacting Kaiser's medical office building, which will be operating right across the sidewalk."
