McCallum Theatre Names New Executive Director/C.E.O.


PALM DESERT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

The McCallum Theatre has appointed a new executive director and chief executive officer, Ted Giatas, effective October 1.

Giatas succeeds Antonia Graphos, who resigned in May.

"I'm delighted and honored to be invited to join the McCallum Theatre," said Giatas, who holds a Master of Education degree from The Pennsylvania State University Pennsylvania State University, main campus at University Park, State College; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1855, opened 1859 as Farmers' High School.  and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Massachusetts The system includes UMass Amherst, UMass Boston, UMass Dartmouth (affiliated with Cape Cod Community College), UMass Lowell, and the UMass Medical School. It also has an online school called UMassOnline. . "I view the theatre as a 'people' place, and look forward to working with a dynamic board and a talented staff to continue the McCallum's tradition as the premier performing arts venue in the desert."

Giatas will be relocating to the Coachella Valley Coachella Valley (kō'əchĕl`ə), arid region, SE Calif., N of the Salton Sea. Water is brought into the region by artesian wells and by the Coachella Canal (123 mi/198 km long), a branch of the All-American Canal built between 1938 and  from Midland, Mich., where he is president and chief executive officer of the Midland Center for the Arts Inc., a public foundation comprised of eight organizations serving the artistic and cultural needs of the region. He joined the Midland Center in 1979.

, a museum of science and technology, an historical museum, three art galleries, six art studio classrooms, a dining facility, meeting rooms and offices.

While at the Midland Center for the Arts, Giatas administered a $5.3 million annual operating budget Noun 1. operating budget - a budget for current expenses as distinct from financial transactions or permanent improvements

 with a $62 million endowment; music, dance and theatre programs; exhibitions in art, science and history; and fund development activities including planned-giving solicitations. He oversaw more than $7 million in renovations and new constructions at the Center. He also directed and booked programs for a 20-event, three-week art, science and humanities festival.

A public reception to welcome Giatas, his wife Suzie and daughter Eva to Palm Desert will be announced later in the fall. The Giatas also have two daughters, Alysia and Marissa, who are currently undergraduates at the University of Michigan (body, education) University of Michigan - A large cosmopolitan university in the Midwest USA. Over 50000 students are enrolled at the University of Michigan's three campuses.
