McAfee.com Unveils New Virus Tracking Method; Uncovers 20% Infection Rate.

Real-Time Virus Map Leverages Global ASP Infrastructure to Give Users Glimpse

Into Worldwide Virus Activity

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ --

McAfee.com (Nasdaq: MCAF MCAF Marine Corps Air Facility
MCAF Modern Chinese Art Foundation

MCAF Miss Camp America Foundation (non-profit AIDS foundation)

), a leading security Application Service Provider (ASP), today unveiled a real-time virus map to provide users with a powerful resource for obtaining information about virus activity around the world. The map was created in an ongoing effort by McAfee.com to research the propagation of viruses and strengthen its services against them. Since the map's inception, the company has scanned nearly 39 billion files, and found approximately 20% of computers to be infected with a virus. Most recently, the resource alerted the company to a significant increase in the number of AOL (A division of Time Warner, Inc., New York, NY, www.aol.com) The world's largest online information service with access to the Internet, e-mail, chat rooms and a variety of databases and services.  users infected with a strain of the "APStrojan.qa." The world virus map can be accessed at www.mcafee.com.

With users' expressed permission, McAfee.com's ASP infrastructure allows it to collect and compile virus information gathered from thousands of users around the world scanning their systems each day on the site. Results are added to a database which compiles information about the user's geographical location, how many files were scanned and which viruses were detected. The findings are then displayed on a world map, inside which users may click to see virus activity over the past 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days, on a U.S. state, country, continent or worldwide scale.

"The advantage of our ASP model is that we can instrument computers worldwide to detect the thousands of viruses 'in the wild' in real-time," said Doug Cavit, CIO CIO: see American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations.

of McAfee.com. "By having this valuable intelligence on hand, we are able to track virus trends, anticipate outbreaks, alert the public to them and more rapidly deploy solutions when an outbreak does occur."

The world virus map collects information sent by McAfee.com's 780,000 subscribers as well as trial users, both of which must opt to share the information with the company. McAfee.com has thus far scanned nearly 39 billion files and found 18 million of them to be infected, translating to a 20% infection rate among individual computers. This new technology was instrumental in revealing the sudden increase of the password-stealing APStrojan.qa, which McAfee.com alerted the public to late last week as a medium-risk virus.

The map also displays a list of "Top 10 Viruses Worldwide" that provides the names of viruses about which users should be aware. The following are the top 10 viruses identified by McAfee.com in the past 30 days:
