This functionality is provided by IniToolx, a powerful new NetTools module that automates the management of .ini files on Windows desktops. McAfee also extended NetTools platform support today with the introduction of NetTools 5.1 for NT Server. First introduced in 1989, NetTools is the defacto standard in Windows Desktop Management. In addition to .ini file management, NetTools performs menu administration, printer configuration management, access control, and enterprise-wide application control. "Windows workstations are notoriously difficult to manage in distributed NetWare environments," said David Wilbanks, NetTools product manager. "In order to roll out a single new application or update, administrators must often manually wade through hundreds of lines of .ini file code at each workstation to make appropriate edits. IniTool solves this problem by centralizing cen·tral·ize v. cen·tral·ized, cen·tral·iz·ing, cen·tral·iz·es v.tr. 1. IniTool allows administrators to install a Windows application A program that is written to run under Microsoft's Windows operating system. Such applications typically run under all 32-bit versions of Windows, but earlier applications might also run under the 16-bit versions (Windows 3.x) as well. By comparing original .ini files to the new .ini files, IniTool creates an output file that can be used to distribute, control, and update .ini files on Windows desktops throughout the enterprise. Administrators can also make changes to specific .ini file lines or sections based on user IDs or NetWare groups. "IniTool has proven to be an important tool for helping me support 950 users in 35 sites," said Richard Retin, a senior technical analyst at a major financial institution based in San Francisco, California “San Francisco” redirects here. "The inclusion of this tool makes NetTools even more valuable for supporting NetWare-connected users." NetTools Now Available for NT Server Today's introduction of NetTools for NT Server marks McAfee's entrance into the NT Server management market. NetTools for NT Server includes three management modules designed to automate administration of NT Server networks. The modules include the new IniTool .ini file manager, the AppMan menu administration module, and the DCL (1) (Digital Command Language) Digital's standard command language for the VMS operating system on its VAX series. (2) (Data Compression L scripting language A high-level programming, or command, language that is interpreted (translated on the fly) rather than compiled ahead of time. A scripting, or script, language may be a general-purpose programming language or it may be limited to specific functions used to augment the running of an for application control. "We believe NT Server will become an increasingly predominant platform for enterprise-wide networks," continued Wilbanks. "This product is in response to Fortune 1000 customers who have discovered a lack of centralized desktop management tools for the NT Server environment." AppMan Improves End-User Menu Administration (NetWare, NT Server) The NetTools Application Manager (AppManx) uses pre-established network group rights and privileges to build and define each user's desktop. Through AppMan, each desktop displays only the applications and icons needed by each user. AppMan effectively replaces the Windows Program Manager with an interface that is nearly indistinguishable from the Program Manager. This capability negates the need for additional end-user training and provides administrators complete centralized control 1. In air defense, the control mode whereby a higher echelon makes direct target assignments to fire units. 2. In joint air operations, placing within one commander the responsibility and authority for planning, directing, and coordinating a military operation or group/category of . AppMan includes new features that allow users to customize the appearance of their desktops. Users can now create personal program groups from network groups. Using this feature, users can drag items from network groups and drop them into their personal group. Network administrators, however, still retain full control over the application. Because the personal groups remain linked with network groups, if the administrator updates the application or revokes the user's rights, changes to the network group are automatically reflected in the user's personal group. Another enhancement allows administrators to roll out and update icons without altering the icon's position on the users screen. Administrators can further control the end-user's desktop by editing the contents of pull-down menus. Utilizing this capability, administrators can deny users access to specific pull-down menu options such as File.Run or File.Exit by removing those options altogether. Print Management (NetWare) The NetTools print manager makes network printing simple and hassle-free for users and administrators. For administrators, NetTools provides complete network-wide printer configuration management and control. NetTools remains the only product on the market offering an automated printer management facility that allows administrators to remotely assign printer rights through a print list. The NetTools print manager allows administrators to configure each network printer's queue, driver, and Windows printing options once and make them available to selected groups of network users. To help users help themselves and minimize printing-related support duties, administrators can create printer-specific help files for such tasks as label alignment and toner cartridge replacement. Users are provided simplified access to printers by location, type, and description. NetTools replaces cryptic NetWare print queue Disk space that holds output designated for the printer until the printer can receive it. names such as "HP_4_ATBLD2_BS" with intuitive descriptions such as "Accounting's Laser Printer." Users can view each printer by queue activity before they send jobs and can be notified by a pop-up window pop-up window n (Comput) → Popup-Fenster nt when jobs are completed. DCL Scripting Language Provides Enterprise-wide Application Control (NetWare, NT Server) The DCL (Desktop Control Language) scripting language, which relies on syntax similar to Visual Basic, offers administrators centralized control over a wide range of network operating parameters. The benefits of DCL are especially pronounced in software distribution, because DCL frees administrators from having to repeat installation tasks. By using DCL's macro recorder A program routine that converts menu selections and keystrokes into a macro. A user turns on the recorder, calls up a menu, selects a variety of options, turns the recorder off and assigns a key command to the macro. When the key command is pressed, the selections are executed. , for example, administrators can perform an installation task a single time. The macro recorder captures this information in a self-running script that can then be transparently rolled out enterprise-wide. The administrator can also perform routine file maintenance tasks using DCL scripts that are automatically activated at startup, as scheduled events, or from icons. In addition to being a powerful administrator's tool, DCL also insulates users from network complexities. As a user selects a program item from their desktop menu, for example, DCL scripts can transparently attach users to file servers, map drives, change paths on-the-fly, and check a user's network membership and log-in rights. Security and Access Control (NetWare) NetTools also features a simple yet powerful workstation access control feature called Secure Station. Secure Station monitors workstation activity and locks the computer with a secure screen saver A utility that was originally created to prevent a CRT from being etched by an unchanging image.
