WebShield Provides Exceptional Anti-Virus Protection

WebShield software leverages McAfee's award-winning anti-virus scanning technology to provide complete protection against virus-infected SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) The standard e-mail protocol on the Internet and part of the TCP/IP protocol suite, as defined by IETF RFC 2821. SMTP defines the message format and the message transfer agent (MTA), which stores and forwards the mail. , FTP FTP

network. WebShield's anti-virus detection can be easily updated each month with McAfee's virus signature updates, which provide protection against the estimated 200 new viruses that are discovered each month. WebShield resides independent of the network firewall and utilizes a dual-homed architecture system for increased security. Dual-homed architectures, which utilize two network interface cards, provide an added barrier to potentially infected traffic. All network traffic is scanned between the cards, alerting administrators of any detected viruses.

For further security, the WebShield system is immune from hosting external hackers and crackers. Only the network administrator has access to the WebShield system, and this access is granted utilizing a one-time password key that generates a randomly different password each time its used by the administrator.

Transparent, High-Performance Protection Against Internet Borne Viruses

Anti-virus scanners for firewalls and Internet gateways must operate transparently, independent of user and administrator intervention. If an anti-virus scanner's operation is not transparent, network users will attempt to find an alternative - and potentially insecure - communication route. To avoid this problem, WebShield is completely transparent to users, and requires no user training or IP address management. Further contributing to WebShield's transparency is it's high-performance packet filtering scanning engine that quickly scans all incoming and outgoing traffic and maximizes network performance.

McAfee World's Leading Vendor of Anti-Virus Solutions

McAfee is the leading vendor of anti-virus software, with a worldwide unit market share of 68% for DOS and Windows PC desktops. The company provides the industry's most comprehensive line of anti-virus software and hardware solutions designed to protect against computer viruses on all major desktop and network computing platforms. The products support DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows NT, Unix, OS/2, the Internet, and the Macintosh.

McAfee's flagship anti-virus product for desktop computers, VirusScan, has over 10 million users worldwide. NetShield, McAfee's award-winning anti-virus software for networks, protects NetWare and NT servers. WebScan, an anti-virus scanner for Web browsers, protects desktop computer users from accidentally downloading virus-infected files from the Internet. For specialized boot virus prevention, McAfee sells BootShield software and licenses its ROMShield firmware to leading PC systems and network adapter companies.

Specification, Pricing and Availability

WebShield software runs on hardware supporting the Intel-compatible and DEC Alpha processor systems. A WebShield subscription license, which provides two years of free updates and support, is priced at $3,995.00. WebShield is priced per gateway, and supports an unlimited number of network-attached client workstations. WebShield ships on August 15, 1996, and will be available through online distribution channels, McAfee's direct sales force, VARs, systems integrators, and firewall vendors.
