Mayor Conde Announces That the Summit Meeting Opens Up Twelve Thousand New Jobs in Rio.RIO DE JANEIRO Rio de Janeiro, city, Brazil Rio de Janeiro (rē`ō də zhänā`rō, Port. rē` thĭ zhənĕē`r , Brazil--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 28, 1999-- Enthusiastic with the refurbishment of important historical areas in Rio de Janeiro, all ready for the European Union European Union (EU), name given since the ratification (Nov., 1993) of the Treaty of European Union, or Maastricht Treaty, to the European Community - Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies. Caribbean Summit Meeting, Mayor Luiz Paulo Conde has another reason to celebrate: for the construction work needed to set up the pavilions, and also, with all the outsourced work, the Summit Meeting opened 12,000 new jobs in the city. The mayor stressed the importance of hosting big international events as they bring permanent benefits to the population of Rio de Janeiro. When compared to '92, when the city hosted the Earth Summit Meeting ( ECO-92 ), the town today has the lowest unemployment rate in Brazil, and once again shows its ability to host large events.
