Chapter: Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. Chapter, member since 2002 Leisure: My husband and I enjoy travel--I've been told that I take "trips of a lifetime" every year for vacation--and we regularly try new restaurants and different types of food. At home, I like to experiment with new recipes, using friends and family as "guinea pigs." I'm also a big film buff. Each year, I take a sneak previews course offered by UCLA extension where we see advance screenings of likely Academy Award contenders and hear from their creators. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Time Management: I'm very organized and try to set priorities so that I'm focused on the most important issues. I also block time in my schedule at regular intervals during the week to provide some focused work time free from meetings. Stress Management: I know that regular exercise is the best stress management, but I can't say that I have time (or is it make time?) to follow my own advice as regularly as I should. One reason I like to see movies in a theater is that they are completely absorbing and a distraction from whatever may be causing me stress. Favorite Book: My assistant gave me 1,000 Places to See Before You Die. I'm reading it now, noting where I've been and marking where I want to visit. I'd like to spend an hour with: Rudy Guiliani. He did a great job as mayor of New York City The Mayor of New York City is the head of the executive branch of the Government of New York City. The office administers all city services, public property, police and fire protection, most public agencies, and enforces all city and state laws within the city. . It was evident in the cleaner, safer streets, subways, etc. But the real reason is the grace with which he rose to lead after the 9/11 tragedy. He pulled people together and became a symbol of resilience and strength. I would like to learn from him about crisis management and grace under pressure. Best Advice: A former boss used to say, "The hard way is the easy way." I've found this to be applicable to many situations in my work life because there are times when so-called "short cuts" come back to bite you! Favorite Job: There are aspects of every job that were great, but my current job brings together many things I like to do and is always challenging. Worst Job: In college, I worked in the library cataloging books on reference cards--in a windowless room with no human interaction. As you can see, my career has improved! Favorite Deal: I enjoy raising capital, which I've done under different circumstances. It's a challenge working with potential investors to coordinate deal activities, articulate the company's business strategy and interpret the financial and business results to maximize value. And, there's a great feeling of accomplishment when the deal closes. I thought I'd grow up to be a stewardess, a teacher, a lawyer. These aspirations changed as I got older. I didn't settle on a business career until college. Quotable quot·a·ble adj. Suitable for or worthy of quoting: a quotable slogan; a quotable pundit. quot : "Most of us go to our graves with our music still inside us," by Oliver Wendell Holmes. This makes me think about making the most of the opportunities that abound in both my business life and life outside work, including priorities about how I spend my time and energy. I suppose this is the definition of inspiring. Email: Maxine.pollack@jdpa.com edited by Ellen M. Heffes |
