Maximum is an international projects management and back office services company with subsidiaries focused on mobile logistics, mobile commerce and other technology solutions. Its mobile commerce business unit began in October 2003 when Maximum entered into the point of sale business by securing exclusive distribution rights for a mobile point of sale terminal called MPOS MPOS Mark Patrick On Sports (radio show)

2002. Since then, Maximum has worked to put in place all of the components required to offer an end-to-end offering in South Africa. This means that Maximum, in association with its partners, can supply a range of terminals, provide multiple applications on one terminal, and offer the back-end systems needed for transaction processing, loyalty program management and reporting. Maximum's system can process transactions for the four major banks in South Africa, which is a competitive advantage as most transaction processing companies process through only one or two banks.

In launching its ATM and credit card transaction processing capabilities, Maximum is the first to market in South Africa with an end-to-end offering running multiple applications all on one terminal. For example, a merchant can now offer pre-paid voucher services (cellular, telephone, electricity and water), banking and loyalty program transactions all from one point of sale terminal. For many merchants, this new offering will mean they can replace multiple terminals they rent that have different transaction processing back-ends with one terminal run through Maximum's back-end. As far as management is aware, there currently are no other companies offering end-to-end multiple application services See ASP and Web services.  in South Africa.

Maximum has already generated substantial interest in this offering since the recent launch and it has been received very positively in the market. The target market is retail chains, hotels and restaurants wherein where·in

Maximum will generate a percentage of every banking, pre-paid and loyalty transaction processed.

"Before we had banking capabilities, we were in the market offering pre-paid solutions and as a result generated quite a bit of interest," said Joshua Wolcott, Maximum's Chief Operating Officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

has been banking. Almost every merchant we approached asked when banking would be on-line. Now that we have banking, we believe we should see that interest translating into purchase orders and service agreements. Getting a percentage of every banking, pre-paid and loyalty program transaction means that our break-even point break-even point - In the process of implementing a new computer language, the point at which the language is sufficiently effective that one can implement the language in itself.  in terms of number of terminals required in the market is now lower."

This offering means that Maximum can now compete for the corporate retail market in terms of the EFT bank card switching. To more effectively service this market, Maximum is doing what its competitors have not done by building up applications for a range of other terminals. In so doing, a customer can use either one of Maximum's preferred terminals or keep existing terminals that are integrated into Maximum's back-end system for transaction processing.

"We had to make a tough decision earlier this year," said Wolcott. "We either had to push forward aggressively with sales of terminals earlier this year and then undergo a costly on-site upgrade later to put multiple applications on the terminals or we had to wait and develop our systems so that terminals that are deployed can sit on our network and new applications or upgrades can be pushed out remotely. In the end, we decided to take the time to do it right and not risk jeopardizing our names in the market with an unfinished solution. Now, we are ready to roll with this first to market offering and we have a lot of interest."

Maximum is initially targeting corporate retailers where establishing a footprint quickly will lead to volume levels that enable Maximum to set extremely favorable fa·vor·a·ble
