John Butler's work spans both classical and modern, from
Carmina Burana to A Portrait of Billie. The prolific choreographer, who
died in 1993, is honored at The Joyce with a retrospective April 10-15.
A Dance Magazine awardee in 1964, he created works for dance luminaries
Mikhail Baryshnikov and Carmen deLavallade and for American Ballet
Theatre, New York City Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Paris Opera
Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem, to name a few. The tribute, John
Butler: An American Master, includes performances by Richmond Ballet,
Desmond Richardson, Tai Jimenez, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and
