TIBURON, Calif. -- The Master Mariners Benevolent Association invites the public aboard classic sailboats Sunday, June 26, 2005 at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon. From 10am until 4pm, explore boats, meet skippers, build model boats, and soak up the history of seamanship sea·man·ship

The MMBA dates back to 1867 when it gained recognition as the Protective Boatmen's Association after staging a successful boat race at the San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  Fourth of July Fourth of July, Independence Day, or July Fourth, U.S. holiday, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Celebration of it began during the American Revolution.  Celebration. This became a popular Fourth of July tradition, as the never disappointing San Francisco winds promised an exciting race, and rowdy participants battled with fists and sails for the prize banner that read "Champion." Though the popularity of these races faded as engine boats grew in importance, the MMBA still holds an annual race in San Francisco Bay San Francisco Bay, 50 mi (80 km) long and from 3 to 13 mi (4.8–21 km) wide, W Calif.; entered through the Golden Gate, a strait between two peninsulas.  and crowns a champion at the celebratory regatta, in addition to the variety of other nautical-themed events it now hosts as well.
