"Agricultural education is very important to our future generations," said Senator Sarbanes. "Kids need to know that milk doesn't come from a carton. The foundation's Ag In The Classroom program not only helps educators to promote and enhance the understanding and appreciation of the importance of agriculture in our daily lives, but also provides an innovative educational program designed to increase students' performance in all academic areas."

MAEF was established as a public, non-profit foundation in 1989 by recommendation of the Governor's Commission on Agricultural Education. It offers training to educators on ways to incorporate agriculture into existing curriculum.

The Foundation also operates mobile agri-science trailers that travel to schools and community events statewide to teach participants about agriculture and environmental issues. To date, more than 1,500 teachers and 250,000 students have participated in hands-on agri-science activities through the Foundation's programs.

The most recent "Ag in the Classroom" summer workshop for teachers graduated 42 participants on July 16.

"MAEF is building excellence in education through the popular hands-on summer and winter Ag In The Classroom workshop, the Teacher Excellence and Mini-Grants Awards and the very popular Ag Products and Aquatic Labs programs," said MAEF's Executive Director, Steven A.Connelly. "In each of these on site labs, students use hands-on activities to explore how current agricultural issues play a role in their lives. A third lab is being developed and will be on the road in the fall."

The Amoss Agriculture Education Center, funded in-part with a $100,000 matching grant matching grant Academia Non-peer-reviewed funding in which a commercial enterprise, foundation, or philanthropy, federal government, contributes a sum of money that 'matches' a financial contribution made by an institution, university or hospital.  from the State of Maryland, provides a classroom, offices and outdoor learning stations to provide hands-on training to both educators and students. Harford County also provided a grant and MAEF continues to solicit private contributions toward the cost of construction.

"Today we are witnessing the culmination of a 10-year-old-dream to provide a permanent home for the outstanding work of the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation," said Secretary Henry A. Virts. "And it is appropriate that we name the center to honor As a verb, to accept a bill of exchange, or to pay a note, check, or accepted bill, at maturity.
