 -- The Metropolitan Museum of Art has made its largest-ever art purchase: $45 million for Madonna and Child The Madonna and Child is one of the central icons of Christianity, representing the Madonna or Mary, mother of Jesus and her son. After some initial resistance and controversy, the formula "Mother of God" (Theotokos  by the early Renaissance painter Duccio de Buoninsegna. The sum more than doubles the $20 million the Met spent in 1998 for a piece by 20th-century painter Jasper Johns. Duccio's work, to be called the Stroganoff stroganoff
