Marvell Offers the Industry's First Multiprotocol Label Switch Solution for Merchant Ethernet Switches.

Marvell (Nasdaq:MRVL), a technology leader in the development of extreme broadband communications solutions, today announced the availability of the industry's first hardware-based Multiprotocol Label Switch (MPLS) solution for off-the-shelf Ethernet switch chips. The MPLS solution was developed by Marvell's Galileo Technology Division and operates in conjunction with the Company's GalNet(R)-3 family of Layer 3/4/5 converged voice/video/data switch processors. The addition of MPLS support in the GalNet-3 family further establishes Marvell's position as a leading commercial silicon provider in the rapidly growing Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) market.

The MPLS hardware works seamlessly with GalNet-3 Layer 3/4/5 converged voice/video/data switch processors via the External Hardware Interface (EHI) bus. A GalNet-3-based router with the MPLS FPGA can be configured as a full-featured Label Switch Router or Label Edge Router. Combined with GalNet-3's advanced features such as the ability to classify packets and to provide extensive QoS, Marvell continues to build on its strength in the multi-billion dollar MAN and optical markets. The MPLS hardware is implemented in both Xilinx and Altera FPGAs.

To facilitate the rapid implementation by customers, Marvell has also worked with Data Connection Limited, a leading provider of communications protocol software, to provide a complete MPLS control and data plane solution. MPLS has received considerable attention because of its ability to solve certain critical MAN issues. MPLS helps segregate traffic and enhances IP network services and efficiency through support of traffic engineering and VPNs. QoS throughout an MPLS network can be maintained by establishing Label Switch Paths (LSPs) based on DiffServ class of service. The MPLS solution from Marvell enables OEMs to differentiate their product offerings and penetrate MAN and VPN markets.
