San Francisco State University's Documentary Film Institute (DFI), a project of the International Center for the Arts (ICA), today announced the appointment of 22 experienced, award-winning documentary filmmakers and educators to its new advisory board. SF State adds to its well-established reputation in film education with the further development of the DFI. The board is comprised of film historians and critics, as well as groundbreaking producers, directors and cinematographers. The variety and depth of experience represented by the board complements the DFI's mission as one of the world's premier educational resources for documentary film and filmmakers.

The DFI created the board by leveraging existing relationships with filmmakers such as Richard Leacock and D.A. Pennebaker, recipients of the 2006 George and Judy Marcus Lifetime Achievement Award in Film, and by forging new bonds with Fernando Solanas, Hubert Sauper and Adam Curtis. By inviting well-known filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Ken Burns and Errol Morris to join the board, the DFI furthers its goal of keeping documentary film current and accessible to the public. The DFI's commitment to preserving and showcasing documentary film's history is reflected in the choice of board members such as Leacock, Pennebaker and Frederick Wiseman, developers of the cinema verite style. The DFI also strives to highlight international filmmaking and has assembled board members from South America, Europe, Britain and the United States.

"The array of talent contained on this advisory board represents some of the best, most innovative filmmaking in cinema history," said Stephen Ujlaki, director of the DFI and chair and professor of the SF State Cinema Department. "This group's real-world experience in the art and process of making documentaries will aid emerging filmmakers on multiple levels. We are grateful for the time and counsel of these artists and we look forward to working with them to make the Doc Film Institute one of the world's top advocates for documentary film."

Board members consult on many of the DFI's ongoing programs. They helped determine the 2006 recipient of the George and Judy Marcus Lifetime Achievement Award in Film, and they assist in selecting the focus of the Documentary Film Festival each spring, under the direction of Ujlaki and DFI Program Curator Tom Luddy. Also, their role includes evaluating priorities for continuing DFI activities such as the creation of a Documentary Resource Center and the mentoring of up-and-coming filmmakers.
