Marshals of pride.


Big-city pride parades are often led by big-name activists and celebrities. Here's a look at some of the people who will be smiling and waving from the grand marshals' cars this June

ALBUQUERQUE June 8-10

David Kopay David Marquette Kopay (born June 28, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois) is a former American football running back in the NFL who in 1975 became one of the first professional athletes to come out as gay.  

In 1975, Kopay became the first NFL football player to come out as gay. He's now 63.

ATLANTA June 23-25

The Reverend Antonio F. Jones and Kerry Pacer

Jones is the pro-gay pastor of Unity Fellowship of Christ Church in southwest Atlanta. Pacer, The Advocate's Person of the Year for 2005, made international headlines for her battle to form a gay-straight alliance at her high school in Cleveland, Ga.

BOSTON June 2-11

The Network/La Red

The local organization has addressed domestic violence among lesbians, bisexual women, and transgender people since 1992.

HOUSTON June 24

Ray Ramirez, Phyllis Randolph Frye, the Reverend Marilyn Meeker-Williams, and Bunnies on the Bayou

Ramirez is a Gay Games athlete and founder of the Lambda Roller Skating Club. Frye is a leading transgender transgender or transgendered

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL June 16-25

Ann Bancroft

The lesbian native of Minnesota is the first woman to have crossed the ice both to the North and South Pole and most recently made headlines in 2001 when she and Norwegian explorer Liv Arnesen became the first women to ski and sail across Antarctica.

Florent Morellet and Christine Quinn

Morellet's renowned Restaurant Florent has been a springboard for grassroots activism for over 20 years. Quinn, an out lesbian New York City councilwoman since 1999, was elected speaker of the city council in January.

Troy and Jason Fienhold-Haasis

The local activists made headlines after exchanging wedding vows in Toronto last June on The Same Sex Wedding Show, then coming back to Nebraska and legally changing their names.

Leslie Townsend and Dan Anders

Townsend is a renowned transgender actress and model. Anders is a prominent local gay rights attorney.

The Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam.  veteran made history in 1991 when she challenged her discharge from the U.S. military for being a lesbian.

SAN FRANCISCO June 24-25

Robert Bernardo, Kathleen McGuire, and the Billy DeFrank LGBT LGBT Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender  Community Center of San Jose

SEATTLE June 24-25

Ron Sims and Lisa Love

Sims, the executive of King County, worked with activists on a recent lawsuit to challenge the state's ban on same-sex marriage. Love, a health and education specialist with the Seattle Public Schools Seattle Public Schools refers to the school district of Seattle, Washington, USA. It is the largest public school district in Washington, and the 44th largest in the United States, with 47,449 students in 2002. , works with the Safe Schools Coalition to promote tolerance and safety for LGBT students.

TORONTO June 19-25

Donald Middleton & Clayton Wilson and Robert Berry & Les Sheare

Each of the prominent Toronto couples have been together for more than 50 years, and all four men have worked as advocates in their communities.

As of press time, several major cities had not yet selected their grand marshals.
