With crude oil heading to the $70 a barrel mark and indications that demand for durable goods is slacking, the major market indices all turned in negative performances for the week ended Aug. 24. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Dow Jones Industrial Average

 and pharmaceutical stocks were off 0.3 percent after the announcement of a $253 million award against industry giant Merck & Co. Inc. over its Vioxx drug. Also off were apparel stocks, by 4 percent. Gaining were software stocks, by 2.8 percent, and computers, peripheral and electronics, by 2.3 percent. Among the leading gainers was Capstone Turbine Corp., a maker of generators, up 23.5 percent, to $3.83, after a favorable eamings report this month. Crown Media Holdings Inc., which operates the Hallmark Channel, was up 20.6 percent, to $10.70, after announcing it was exploring selling the channel.
